Junior Pupils Look To The Olympics

In their assembly this week pupils from Years 1 to 6 were asked to consider what they believed were important qualities for competitors in the Olympics. Words such as determination, courage, respect and excellence came up.  In addition, the concept of equality was explored.  Mr Clewarth discussed the Paralympics with the pupils and asked them to consider some of the difficulties faced by disabled people in sport.

There were some excellent and very mature answers, and it was agreed that all sport should be accessible for all people.  When a request was made for an really good footballer to come and help, there was no shortage of volunteers.  However, Will, from 6C, and Ethan from 3P, found it a little strange when Mr Clewarth blindfolded them.   With help from willing assistants, the boys did manage to at least make contact with the ball!

The idea of ‘blind-football’ as a sport was enthusiastically discussed, along with some of the difficulties faced by the players.  It was agreed that ‘teamwork’ was most essential for this.  In the closing prayer, the children thanked God for the gifts of healthy bodies and for courage to overcome problems – even when it is really difficult.
