Helping A Smooth Transition – Part 3

The transition from Sunny Hill to Silcoates Junior School continued this week for the children in the Reception class when they once again joined the Year One class, this time in a lesson about the solar system. They learned a rhyme to help them remember the order of the planets and they also found out some interesting facts about some of the planets.

During lunchtime play a group of children self-initiated their learning through play. By collecting an assortment of balls they represented the sun and the planets, and they then set themselves the task to arrange them in the correct order.

Tarmac Completed On Pitch

Further to our story last week, we can now confirm that the tarmac layer on the all-weather pitch has been completed. The next stage will be to put down a layer of rubber to absorb shocks and then to put the artificial surface on top. The eagle-eyed among you will also notice the additional landscaping that has taken place. Exciting times!

Wakefield Year 7 Athletics League

Our Year 7 athletes were in action at the first Wakefield schools’ athletics meeting at Thornes Park on Monday 20^th May, with eight boys and seven girls taking part. All our athletes competed enthusiastically and gave very creditable performances, with special mentions for Lily-Rose Brown who ran a fine 75m hurdles and 600m, and the 4x100m girls’ relay team who easily won their race. Notable performances from the boys came from Joe Summers in the 100m and long jump, and Dominic Taylor in the long jump.

Athletics Vs St Olave’s

On Thursday 16^th May, girls from Year 7 and 8 took part in their first year group match of the term at St Olave’s. They refused to let the weather dampen their spirits and performed very well in the field events, before the heavens opened and the rain made the track events very challenging. Although both age groups lost their respective fixtures, there were some notable performances, as follows:

Year 8 – Gwyn Wallis, 18.59m in the discus and 2:56 in the 800m; Ebony Maude, 6.37m in the shot put; Poppy McDermott, 19.28m in the javelin and 7:10 in the 1500m; Ellie Hague, 1.20m in the high jump.

Year 7 – Lily-Rose Brown, 3:04 in the 800m and 1.20m in the high jump; Olivia Mina, 15.60m in the javelin; Maddie Evans, 6.89m in the shot put; Maddie Scott, 32.47 in the 200m; Abbey Crowther – 14.70m in the discus.

Well done to all the girls who participated!

Year 9 Geography Field Trip To Malham

On Friday 17^th May, Year 9 pupils embarked on a field trip to look at the various physical and human aspects of Geography around Malham. Janet’s Foss, Gordale Scar and the limestone pavement at Malham Cove were all studied, as well as looking at the human impacts of tourism in a National Park. The trip not only covered parts of the Year 9 curriculum, but it is also linked in to the Year 10 GCSE syllabus for those who are carrying on their study of the subject next year.

Upper Sixth Leavers’ Day Out

The Upper Sixth had a fun-filled leavers’ day out at Alton Towers last week. The weather stayed fair and those who had been mocked for wearing shorts had the last laugh. The theme park was very quiet and the lack of queues meant that the adrenaline junkies got their fill of thrills, spills, twists, turns and drops. A few went an interesting shade of grey which blended with their leavers’ hoodie, but the trip was a welcome day of recreation before the serious business of final exams. Good luck to all the students as they begin their final period of study leave before their A2 exams.

Representative Athletics Success

Following the recent district trials that we have been highlighting, we are delighted to confirm that seventeen of our athletes have been selected to represent Wakefield at the West Yorkshire Championships on Saturday 8^th June, one of the largest groups to have been selected from Silcoates for a number of years. They are:

Senior Boys: George Brown, long jump

Intermediate Boys: Nick Gott, 100m; James Carver, 200m; George Heppinstall, pole vault; Harry Ansell-Wood, long jump; Brad Kittrick, shot; Callum Gillott, discus

Junior Boys: Alex Ward, 200m; Ryan Bolger, 300m; Reece Chapman-Smith, hurdles

Intermediate Girls: Laura Pearson, 300m; Georgie Harrison, hurdles

Junior Girls: Zoe Humphrey, 200m; Jenny Watson, hurdles; Corinne Berry-McGraw, long jump; Georgia Hodgkiss, discus; Poppy McDermott, javelin

Very well done to all these athletes and we wish them all the best of luck for the competition next month.

Double Celebration For Year 6

Friday 17^th May was a special day in more than one way, because it saw Year 6 mark two birthdays in style, with Charlotte being 11 on the day and Dylan celebrating the same landmark on Saturday.

The Year 6 pupils are a great team and very supportive of each other, hence a number of cakes were baked by them (with some help from mums!), to make this a ‘Cake Friday Extraordinaire’! The children who had baked served their friends, and there was so much remaining that the teachers sampled some too!

It’s fortuitous that we’re going on our Adventure Camp to Lake Windermere this week so that we can work it all off! More on that story later.

Year 4 Visit To Old Moor Nature Reserve

On Wednesday 15th May, Year 4 enjoyed an educational visit to Old Moor Nature Reserve. Here’s what two of the children reported:

Brodie – ‘We went mini-beast hunting, which was great but didn’t go too well for me, as I caught the same bug twice. Just my luck! Next came bird-watching; silence and calm echoed through the hide, as we observed.’

Kiran – ‘The highlight of my day was probably bird-watching, as I enjoyed the beautiful birds tweeting harmoniously. I can do a red-breasted robin impression if you would like to hear me.’

Both – ‘The day was completed by some exciting pond-dipping, where all sorts of new creatures were discovered. We also got to pick up creatures such as snails and slugs.’

The pictures below illustrate some of the fun and learning that the children enjoyed. The staff would also like to thank Mrs Hirst and Mrs Bagshaw for their invaluable assistance on the day.
