On Friday 7th April, thirty five rugby and cricket players from Silcoates, along with four staff and twenty eight parents and supporters headed to Cape Town, South Africa, for a sports tour and a once in a lifetime trip. The rugby squad played three very physical matches against strong Cape Town schools. The first game against Wynberg School was won 51-12 with a commanding seven try performance. The second match was a very physical battle against Redham School in Constantia. After going 10-0 down, Silcoates worked their way back into the match to clinch a 21-15 victory with seven penalties from the boot of Captain, Harry Davey.  The final match proved a step too far against Fairmont School from the Northern Suburbs who were the Cape Town Schools Division One Champions. Silcoates kept up with the pace and physicality of their opponents until the last few minutes during which the hosts won 31-25.  The young cricket squad played three excellent games against local clubs; Bellville , Sunningdale and Western Province C.C. It proved to be a great experience with superb hospitality and the win and two close losses provided invaluable preparation for the forthcoming season.  The tour group and parents also enjoyed the local culture with trips to Cape Point, The Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach and Table Mountain.

At the presentation dinner and awards evening Will Henshall announced Adam Hopkinson as the rugby Vice Captain for next season and Harry Davey made a speech as outgoing captain and announced James Flanagan as next season’s 1st XV Captain.  The time in Cape Town was rounded off with lunch in the idyllic surroundings of Boschendal Vineyard, nestled in the Simonsberg Mountains between Stellenbosch and Franschoek.  To complete the tour, the two groups flew to Johannesburg where they enjoyed two days on safari in the Pilansberg National Park, where they saw elephants, rhinos, buffalo, antelopes, zebra, warthog, giraffes, lions and cheetahs.

Thank you to all the staff, boys and parents involved for making it a memorable tour.
