Congratulations to our Year 10 public speaking team who are going through to the national final of a competition organised by the English Speaking Union. The Churchill Public Speaking Competition is the largest and most prestigious public speaking contest in the country, with around 400 teams taking part. Our team – now one of the top eight in the country – will be travelling to the University of Cambridge in late April for the final. After our team’s victory in the first round on 5th February, they won the North East Regional Final on Saturday 27th March. Our speaker, Jenny, delivered a passionate speech about ‘our moral and legal duties towards refugees’, and our chair and questioner, Emma and Poppy, responded skilfully to a speech which considered whether ‘the UK needs a written constitution’. Mr Wardle, the Head of English and the team’s coach, said, “I am immensely proud of our team’s achievements. The competition is very challenging and requires a great deal of confidence and critical thinking, and to see our team speaking with such conviction and intelligence was fantastic. We will now be training hard for the national final!”
