The School is thrilled to report that over a quarter of all grades were awarded at A* to A and over half at A* to B. In addition, 85% of university applicants have secured a place at their first-choice institution, and 96% have been accepted by either their first or second choice.

Across all students, the proportion achieving A* to A grades was 4% higher than forecast. The picture is even more impressive for those in the more able band, who achieved 17% higher than predicted, while students in the high ability cohort achieved 9% higher than expected.

Further Mathematics saw every student achieve an A* to A grade, and in Art and Photography, all students achieved A* to B grades. Over two thirds of Business, Geography and Maths students were awarded A* to B grades and the most common grade in Physics was an A. These outstanding outcomes reflect the breadth and quality of teaching at Silcoates, as well as the commitment and drive of our students.

A-Levels

Over 1/4 of all grades awarded at the highest level A* and A
Over 1/2 of all grades awarded at A* to B
96% of university applicants secured their first or second choice.

We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements. These results demonstrate not only their hard work and determination but also the expertise of our teaching staff and the supportive, ambitious environment here at Silcoates. To see our more able and high ability students exceeding their predictions by such significant margins is a testament to the quality of teaching and learning at the school.

University and careers advice

Planning a student’s onward journey from Silcoates is just as important to us as their Sixth Form experience.

Every student receives specialist University and careers advice from our dedicated Careers Adviser, as well as support from the Deputy Head, the Head of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form tutors. Assistance in developing personal statements for University applications is particularly strong at Silcoates. In 2023, 84% of all students secured their first choice University – this included Veterinary Science at the University of Nottingham, Engineering at The University of York, Music at the Royal Northern College of Music and Natural Sciences at Durham University.

Silcoates offers a full support programme, including initiatives such as the Oxbridge Group and academic discussion groups to ensure that students are fully supported to realise their potential. We ensure that pupils across different year groups benefit from tailored activities to guide them in their career choices.

A new Careers Hub provides students with a dedicated space to explore and actualise their future selves. With support and advice always on hand through our dedicated Careers Adviser, students gain invaluable career insights. Initiatives such as UCAS/Careers Week and other apprenticeship opportunities also take place throughout the year. Students use Unifrog to help collate their applications.

Lower Sixth students engage in activities such as visiting the Leeds Apprenticeship Fair and participating in mock interviews to gain a practical understanding of job interviews. Regular Careers Breakfasts are also held throughout the year, featuring guest speakers who share insights into their industries and pathways into their sectors.

We also recognise the value of first-hand Work Experience and all Lower Sixth students undertake a work experience placement. This is an extremely valuable opportunity in helping our Sixth Form students to clarify their future higher education or career choices, whilst also enhancing their long-term employability skills.
